20 Social Science terms

This Glossary contains words related to my field of study and my passion, more precisely, law and traveling. I have been studying Social Science for more than 3 sessions by now, and I am currently looking to register myself in a program in law at the University of Montreal. This glossary will help student to develop their vocabulary about law and travel.

Arbitration
noun
The use of an arbitrator to settle a dispute.
Example: Thomas Mountford, Warwick's retainer, acted as guarantor of an ARBITRATION by Gloucester and was given an annuity by him after his accession, while his kinsman John was one of the duke's chaplains.

Criminal
adjective
Relating to, involving, or being a crime.
Example: The emphasis on "crime" and the "CRIMINAL acts" of the rioters in the official responses to the 1985 riots took a general and a specific form.

Explore
verb
Travel in or through (an unfamiliar country or area) in order to learn about or familiarize oneself with it.
Example: But in another sense, as any visitor to central Italy may know, if we contemplate and EXPLORE these delectable places with historical insight and imagination, the answer lies all about us.

Inquiry
noun
An act of asking for information.
Example: The research methodology adopts an interpretive mode of INQUIRY.

A police officer who is doing an inquiry.
Journey
noun
An act of traveling from one place to another.
Example: In the middle of the book Aeneas is told he has to go down into the underworld and it is only really his love for his father and his desire to see him again that gives him the courage to make the terrible JOURNEY.

Judge
noun
A public official appointed to decide cases in a court of law.
Example: Public protest followed a JUDGE who fined a rapist 2,000 after asserting that the woman had been guilty of contributory negligence by hitch - hiking.

Jury
noun
A body of persons sworn to give a verdict on some matter submitted to them especially : a body of persons legally selected and sworn to inquire into any matter of fact and to give their verdict according to the evidence.
Example: The trial - if there is a contested case it will be heard before a JURY.

Justice
noun
Just behavior or treatment.
Example: It will be said that we are not doing JUSTICE to the viewpoint of the opposing group.

Law
noun
The system of rules which a particular country or community recognizes as regulating the actions of its members and which it may enforce by the imposition of penalties.
Example: For the irony is, in a society like ours apparently dedicated to "LAW and order" and having a penal policy based largely on deterrent principles, it appears that corporate crime somehow gets left out of the arena of legal and social control.

Example: In 1988 there were 168,298 LEGAL abortions on residents of England and Wales (figure 4.5).

Obey
verb
Comply with the command, direction, or request of (a person or a law); submit to the authority of.
Example: First, some accept its authority and OBEY its instructions because they are binding on them.

Set off
verb
Begin a journey.
Example: Warriors, who SET OFF for a long journey would take 'a piece of home' with them on board, which is useful evidence for reconstruction of their ethnic identity (Hardt, Lübke and Schorkowitz 2003).

Take off
verb
Of an aircraft or bird become airborne.
Example: When a resultant is radial, the body can TAKE OFF, like a rocket or a jet engine.

Touring
noun
Participation in a tour.
Example: (The social investigator Henry Mayhew came across bundling practices while TOURING Germany in the 1860s, which he took to be "licentious".).

Tourism
noun
Practice of traveling for recreation.
Example: Even if it is not said in those articles, we can not forget that reducing the number of flights would also reduce the number of people who live thanks to the flights, especially all the people of the TOURISM industry.

Traveling
verb
To go on or as if on a trip or tour.
Example: There are a lot more people TRAVELING abroad and eating food which may not have been prepared to the same standards we have in the UK.

To make a journey.
Example: Suggestions on Level 3 Level 3 is an area without plan before TRIP, but tourist purchase of gift or other products do happen during TRIP.

Verdict
noun
An opinion or decision made after judging the facts that are given, especially one made at the end of a trial.
Example: When the VERDICT was announced, the London Evening Standard itemised the catalogue of the killer's violent record stretching over sixty years.

Wandering
adjective
Traveling aimlessly from place to place; itinerant.
Example: Best practice in fall minimization among WANDERING clients.

We can imagine a person walking in the street without a goal.
Wayfaring
noun
The action of traveling by foot.
Example: The Society for the Improvement of the Poor, constructed and opened (1921) the WAYFARING hotel to accommodate 500 men.
